The Awake & Anew Story
Back in 2020, as life was quickly and dramatically changing all around us, I began to think about starting a small, family business where we could start to build a foundation beyond the career world.
As many of us were too, we suddenly found ourselves homeschooling. I decided it would be the perfect time to incorporate ‘Life Lessons’ into each school day. There are so many things in life that just are not taught in a public classroom. Thinking back to my childhood, my mom would have me file my own taxes from my frozen yogurt shop income, she would take my brother and I to classes to learn about car maintenance, how to change the oil or a tire yourself, she taught us how to use a drill or wash clothes, all at a very young age. So we started teaching my daughter things like, how to clean a toilet, how to grow fruits and vegetables, how to shoot a BB gun and each day was a new Life Lesson. This quickly became her favorite part of the new school day. One of those lessons was making candles, of which I knew nothing about.
I’ve always been one of those people who sees something and thinks, I can totally do that or make that. Often, I try it, think, that was cool and move onto the next thing. But when I started making candles, it was more involved than I thought it would be and I enjoyed it. I'm always smelling every candle in the store! And that is where our story began.
Along the way, we found that both my daughter and I really liked making soap as well. Although we have very differing opinions on what makes a nice soap. I favor a nice smell and is good for your skin and she favors color and glitter! So she started her own line of kid friendly, super cute soaps that she designs and they can be found in Clover’s Corner. Those profits go to her and her savings. I'm trying to teach her about savings, hard work and preparing for her future. More Life Lessons!
In addition to myself and my daughter, my husband also started a small business, Adrift Woodworks. He recently retired after twenty plus years in the United States Coast Guard and has always enjoyed woodworking so he started making all kinds of furniture, from bunk beds, to backyard playscapes, to wall art, to this beautiful desk I’m typing on. We truly are a small family business and we are so very thankful for your support. We look forward to growing and learning and have so many more things planned.
